The choir was formed in 1964 when a group of old girls from Rothwell Grammar School got together to sing for relaxation and enjoyment
under the direction of their music teacher, Joyce Blakey. The Rodillian Singers or 'The Rods', as the choir is affectionately known, plays a
significant part in the rich musical fabric within the Wakefield area. The choir loves to sing, and the passion, dedication and quality that has
sustained it for 45 years is still as strong today.
Today under the leadership of their Musical Director Sue Gwynn, the choir has enjoyed new success. Sue's enthusiasm and vision have moved
the choir from strength to strength. Developing a challenging and stimulating repertoire: from classical; folk; swing; jazz; songs from the
shows and songs from Africa. The Rodillian Singers are more than just another 'ladies choir', they demonstrate how a female voice choir can
challenge and move its audience, performing innovative, challenging and different music. The choir maintains a busy schedule of concerts, singing
at weddings, helping many charities both locally and nationally and winning many awards at festivals.
At the Mrs Sunderland Festival in February last year, the choir was awarded first prize in the Choir Programme class. The choice of three
contrasting pieces was adjudged to be enjoyable and very suited to their style and sound. In the Choir Prize Winner's Challenge, against strong
opposition, the Rodillians were again awarded first place, and for a thrilling conclusion, their performance of 'Mary Did You Know?' won the
Jessie Jameson Centenary Baton for the best song of the day. At the Eskdale Festival, in Whitby last year, the Rodillians won the Ladies Choir
Prize and were adjudged winners of the Choir Recital in a five choir section in the evening.
Our singing has taken us to destinations including the Isle of Arran, France, Germany and Dublin; other memorable events were performing at the
Royal Albert Hall and hosting the African Children's Choir. Essentiall we are a group of friends who love to sing and share the joy of music
with others.
The choir has recently recorded its second CD called 'Simply Rodillian' and the big highlight of this year's events will be singing with
Katherine Jenkins at York Minster in June.
