Music has been a lifelong love for Sue. From an early age she was encouraged by both her mother, who was a music teacher and also a former Rodillian member herself, and also by Joyce Blakey, Head of Music at Rothwell Grammar School and the founder of the Rodillian Singers.

By the time she was in her teens Sue was playing the piano, recorder and oboe and singing with the original choir under Joyce’s baton. This love of music naturally shaped her career choice and she went on to train as a teacher with a specialism in music at Middleton St George College in County Durham before returning to Yorkshire to teach music at a secondary school in Pontefract as well as teaching piano, singing and oboe to private pupils. Now, almost 32 years later she is still teaching, at primary level, and still passing on her love and enthusiasm for music to new generations of children.

Sue returned to the Rodillian Singers 14 years ago after having her family, and re-established her links with the choir initially as first alto and then as Deputy Conductor before taking full charge of the choir as Musical Director in 2004, from when she has led the choir to greater achievements and new challenges. Sue has introduced a broad and refreshingly diverse range of music to the repertoire of the choir, maintaining the high standards of her predecessors and stretching members to give even more, whilst still ensuring that first and foremost making music is fun.

Although music and teaching takes up the majority of her time she still finds inspiration in the wonderful Yorkshire countryside and likes nothing better than walking in the Dales, an activity she shares with her husband whenever she gets the opportunity.
